This is a region I started more than a year ago as an open tutorial region. What I had in mind was some kind of learning parcours along which users would get introduced to the basic abilities to use OpenSim, which mainly means using the viewer. And that’s where the first problem was.
Everyone uses a different viewer, and viewer development changes faster than you can teach people how to use the cool new stuff. So either this tutorial would have to be constantly updated and incredibly complex to teach all kinds of different viewers, or it would fall short all too soon.
The idea was to have “the path”, along which the essential skills would be taught (walking, chatting, zooming, inventory, dressing, teleporting, etc.) and, if they stray “off the beaten path” into the forested landscape, could discover more advanced tutorials there (building, editing, animating, hypergridding, scripting, etc.). This was way ambitious.
The tutorials were planned to be small notecards that would read as if written by someone’s notes on discovering this strange new world inside worlds, and leaving them along the path for other travellers to find. This was even more ambitious.
So in the end, I didn’t get very far with it. I finished the first few stations, the landscape, layout and most buildings, but it needs a lot more writing and explaining, and I just lack the time to do all that. However, I decided to release it here for now. Maybe someone will find it useful, or pick up where I had left off. If anything, it’s a nice little landscape to walk in.

This could be an interesting idea for an interactive story. One could follow the path for the main narrative, but go off the path for information about the setting.
An idea would be for advertising a new book, play, movie (etc). The visitor could learn about characters, find notes that give a back ground for a story or something like that.

This looks beautiful and I love the tutorial idea. Thank you so much for sharing:) I think I will download it and make it my first ever oar experiment. So wish me luck and thanks again

Thanks for the comments everyone! I’m glad this little region is useful in all of its incompleteness.

This is really a great idea. It would be great to see specific noob islands for specific themes – a region for building, a region for scripting, a region for social interaction, a region for media/machinima, a region for developing various content and so forth. That way those with a more select knowledge base could focus exclusively on one thing instead of trying to cover everything.

We are developing something very similar on the MOSES grid. It will become a public OAR file when it is completed, spanning four regions (it may grow:)If anyone has any resource – slurls or website links for excellent tutorials on specific topic – please share. And yes, we will be crediting any content we use or emulate.
