Well met, Taotics!
You might have noticed that we’ve been discussing an OSC hypergrid place in the forums for quite a while, and I am finally able to say that it’s actually, really, here. I know this, because I’m standing in it, or rather, my avatar is, which is me, so it’s alright to say that. So, let’s hear your questions!
What is this hypergrid place you speak of?
As already mentioned in the forums, the goal is to make OSC more readily available in-world. To this end, I’ve proposed two solutions: Creating a set of “shop regions” as OARs, which feature a set of our creations, and which grid owners can easily upload to their grids and make available there, and a decentralized OSC hypergrid network, where we point to destinations on the hypergrid where people can acquire OSCreations. Today, I made the start with a small OpenSim standalone on this here server, which will progressively hold more and more of the creations that are already on the site.
But: This is not about OSC providing a grid! Rather, this should be one of many destinations on the hypergrid for our creations, and if anyone already has a region where people can grab creations from this site and which is also open to the hypergrid, please send me the details, so I can include the destination into our sidebar.
So, where can I find OSC on the hypergrid?
The adress for the OSC standalone is http://opensim-creations.com:9000 for the center, as well as http://opensim-creations.com:9000:The Path for the lower and http://opensim-creations.com:9000:Ever One for the upper hypergrid regions. Further destinations will be added to the sidebar. If you’re not sure what this whole hypergrid thing is and how to use it, please see our handy guide to the hypergrid for instructions.
Okay, and what can I find there?
At the moment the standalone consists of seven regions, which hold a small number of OSCreations. The layout is as follows:
More and more creations will be added to the regions in the future and whenever one is “complete” (i.e. holds a reasonable amount of creations withouth lagging too bad), I’ll upload the OAR here so everyone can incorporate it in their own simulator.
Please keep in mind that every region hosts a different set of creations, so it’s useful to visit them all. The Palmhouse serves as the center and meeting place, and is a good starting point.
Okay, anything else?
Why, I’m so glad you asked! In fact, I’d like to offer a little more to the community than just a freebie destination, which is why the Palmhouse is planned to be a destination for events and meetings, and in fact, to celebrate the launch I’ll be streaming the wonderful Blender-made short film Elephant’s Dream for the remainder of June, and a changing selection of free and open movies after that. (If you’re eagle-eyed, and mesh-capable, you might even find a little asset from the movie to take home with you.) Likewise, all the regions of the standalone will be tuned in to the OSC open stream.
Godspeed on the hypergrid
V

OK a barrage of questions….
How do we get a shop area?
How many avs can this support?
Could this server plan host something like a book club?

There are no “shop” areas, really. I’ve uploaded a few oars from here, and will work on uploading all creations from OSC in the future, so if it’s on the website, it will end up on the standalone. HOWEVER: If you want to help/speed up things a little, feel free to hypergrid in and rez anything anywhere (with the according rights and attributions of course), I deliberately left rezzing priviledges open for everyone.
The number of avatars it supports is – probably – around 5 to 10 at a time (currently there’s about 800 MB of RAM left until things start to get seriously wonky). It’s not intended for big events, but if you and a couple of friends want to meet there, I won’t stand in your way. If the sim holds, it holds, if not, then it was too many avatars.

I’ve thought for the longest time tat we need to get OSC stuff boxed up and put directly into opensim –this is awesome, Vanish; great job! \o/

Yay!!!!!! Double Yay! Now I can open a hot dog emporium on my grid and invite you all!
Just kidding.
V, Honestly this is a step in the right direction. I commend you for not waiting on getting it available. As soon as I take care of some stuff today, I will build a hypergate and teleport in to check it out!
WTG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
