I just posted a request for a set of terrain files for megaregion meeting space – http://opensim-creations.com/forums/topic/what-are-you-looking-for/#post-11933 – and though I would share some original terrains that I had created with GIMP.
These are about a dozen different PNG terrain files (plus JPG files so you can get a preview of what they look like). The idea is that you can stitch them together into nice, large terrains for megaregions or continents on a grid. All the edges are designed to fit together next to flat regions.
Since flat regions are nice for building stuff — easy to move buildings and roads around if the terrain is totally flat, and you can always drop in an ornamental pond later.

A terrain for a wide river. The top and bottom edges would attach seamlessly to standard flat region terrains.
I’m releasing them under the Enerific license (aka the Linda Kellie license). (It’s says CC-Attribution in the license field but really, I do not need attribution. It’s just that the Enerific license isn’t an option — wish it was!) Do whatever you want with these. Edit them, rotate them, stretch them, shrink them, etc… etc… no attribution necessary. If you sell them, at least have the decency to jazz them up, smooth out any rough edges, add any missing parts — I think these could use some more corner regions and a flat region — and package them up nicely.
And these are free to use on commercial grids, private grids, Second Life, or for tattooing on your butt.
Since I have no particular skills with any terrain tools, I did all these in GIMP and Paint, which is why they’re in PNG and JPG format, not anything more official and terrain-y like RAW.

[...] You can also create interlocking beachfront terrains, like I did here: These beach terrains are a free download from OpenSim Creations. [...]
