I’m not one to be ruled by my ego. But when I spend hours creating or modding something and someone actually takes the time to vote it 1 out of 10 I have to wonder if that’s a) time I wasted or b) someone trolling the site and just voting low to be ridiculous.
I messaged Vanish about the topic and he mentioned people can vote who aren’t registered users or logged in. I’d like to suggest we restrict the voting to people who actually sign up and are logged in.
Furthermore, if you are registered and you think something is so bloody awful you need to publicly vote it down, have the decency to privately pm the creator and say “hey your texture was really off in this area” or “the download didn’t work etc”. Offer constructive critique so we can all evolve and improve in our skills. I certainly don’t expect my posted content to be everyone’s cup of tea. To be honest though, I’ve downloaded and decided not to use a few things on here too. I didn’t feel the need to trash the creator’s post with a low rating just because the colour or style of an item wasn’t to my personal taste.
What do you think?
April 30, 2012 at 5:30 pm #9992Hi, just chiming in to say I’m totally open for suggestions. If you (the users) want to limit the voting system, or do away with it completely, it’s perfectly fine for me.
The reason it got introduced in the first place is to give people some way to gauge which creations are popular; I’ve got to admit that the votes baffle me sometimes as well. I just don’t know of a better system, so again, I’m open (and happy) for suggestions.
May 1, 2012 at 5:42 pm #9993I for one like the things you’ve shared with the community on this website Jamie. I also noticed that your ratings are high on everything but the last upload of a modded Kellie top which you made into a dress. Frankly the texture on it is …meh. I didn’t download it or vote.
There’s nothing “bloody awful” about what you’ve shared, and I sincerely hope Vanish keeps the current voting system in place.
May 2, 2012 at 5:28 pm #9994Thanks for that Eliza. I appreciate both the compliment and your honest opinion of the last item. I’m more concerned about outside votes in terms of spammers than whether or not anyone actually likes what I post personally. I make stuff for my own avatars and use it regardless.
May 4, 2012 at 6:57 am #10003Since I’ve never seen any spam or trolling here at all, I’d have to assume that the vote in question was legitimate, and was simply someone providing feedback in an anonymous context–not everyone is comfortable with providing constructive criticism (I know *I’m* not), and voting systems are great at providing an opportunity to rate something without (publicly) stepping on anyone’s toes. Different people like different things, and when a voting system is place, you just have to trust that the math behind it will rate you impartially based on an aggregation of all the votes, and you have to remember that a lot of the people voting are doing so *precisely because* they’re not comfortable with PM’ing the creator with feedback.
May 4, 2012 at 7:54 pm #10004You make a valid point. I guess I’m more of a cards on the table person. If somebody tells me why they think something is worth a low rate, it helps me improve for the next round.

AnonymousIs there anyway to restrict voting to only those who make a comment? thereby forcing feedback? You should be able to spot the trolls pretty easy then. After all their posts would be like, “you suck!”
Just an idea.
May 19, 2012 at 4:59 pm #10135Hm, good idea. Sadly the choices for voting are either: Everyone, only visitors, only members, or nobody. However: I forgot to mention that every member can make these settings themselves on their posts. On the right hand side of the posting window there’s a section called “GD Star Rating”, where you can choose the “Post Star Rating” (which is the one used for the posts) and set it to whoever you want, or even deactivate it completely (“Locked” means nobody can vote, and “locked and hidden” means the voting system doesn’t even show). Here’s a screenshot:
